You’ve heard the name and seen the pictures of a delicious sandwich type of dish, but you’ve probably always wondered, what exactly is a gyro? The gyro (pronounced yee-ro) is a tasty sandwich-like food made using pita bread, lamb, beef, chicken, or pork. It’s also combined with tomato, onion, and a yogurt-based sauce known as tzatziki sauce. This sandwich is very similar to the Shawarma. Some gyros are stuffed with french fries and some parts of Northern Greece serve their gyros with ketchup and mustard. The name “gyro” itself is translated in Greek to mean ‘circle’ or ‘turn’.
From Greece to the USA
This mouth-watering sandwich is thought to have first originated in Greece and is traditionally filled with mouth-watering thin slices of marinated pork. The meat in gyros is also traditionally cooked in a vertical rotisserie, which makes it easier for the meat to be marinated from top to bottom. The history of the gyro is extensive, dating all the way back to the Ottoman Empire. However, the gyro is thought to first have made its debut in the United States around the 1970s, mainly in Chicago and New York City before spreading to other cities and states.
